Facebook on Monday began enlisting outside developers to
create ways its Messenger service can help health organizations battling
the novel coronavirus.
The social network also invited software savants to take part in an
online “hackathon” aimed at creating ways to use Messenger to ease
social-distancing and deliver accurate information about the pandemic,
according to Messenger vice president Stan Chudnovsky in a blog post.
He unveiled a global program intended to connect government health
organizations and UN agencies with developers who can create ways to use
Messenger share accurate information and speed up responses to people’s
questions.
Software makers, for example, could help agencies automate answering
common questions, to allow staff to tackle more challenging tasks.
Developers can also help organizations use software to quickly distribute updated information.
UNICEF
and Pakistan’s Ministry of National Health already use Messenger to
keep people posted about COVID-19, according to the Facebook-owned
messaging platform.
Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp
recently launched a free World Health Organization alert designed to
answer questions about the coronavirus and debunk “coronavirus myths.”
The service, launching in English, is to expand in coming weeks to include Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.
WhatsApp last week launched a Coronavirus Information Hub in partnership with WHO and United Nations organizations.
WhatsApp,
which claims more than a billion users, issued a $1 million grant to an
International Fact Checking Network alliance devoted to reporting on
coronavirus rumors spreading on messaging services.
“We think the
most important step WhatsApp can take is to help connect people directly
with public health officials providing crucial updates about
coronavirus,” spokesman Carl Woog told AFP.
Concerns have been raised about WhatsApp and other messaging services being used to spread bogus information about coronavirus.
WhatsApp software prevents users from blasting messages to massive numbers of people at once, which tends to be a spam tactic.
The service also labels forwarded or chain messages to show people they did not come directly from a friend or family member.

Former Big Brother Naija

the giant of Africa and not her home country Nigeria because the former
is always ahead of the latter in some critical sectors.
"Ghana should be called the giant of Africa, not Nigeria" - BBNaija's Gifty explains
Her concern follows the declaration of Kolkota International Airport as the best and most improved airport in Africa by the Airport Council International (ACI).
According to her, it is unimaginable how Ghana
is always ahead of Nigeria in some vital sectors of the continent’s
economy despite the latter’s huge resources.
The beautiful lady is worried that
her motherland is more notorious for all the bad reason including
corruption, terrorism and other social vices rather than infrastructural
and economic development.
Pouring out her frustrations on social media, Gifty Powers wrote: "Honestly
ehn, Ghana should be called the giant of Africa, because they make good
use with their heads and not with their belly/selfish interest.
"Every country does politics (corruption), I
get it, Ghana hides theirs but Nigeria opens theirs like say na we own

Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, has given reasons he was
wearing a Juventus jersey in quarantine training session with teammate,
Victor Lindelof.
Pogba said he was wearing the Juventus jersey on Wednesday in support
of international teammate Blaise Matuidi, who tested positive for
coronavirus (COVID-19) earlier this week.
Newsmen recall that Matuidi became the second Juventus player to test positive for coronavirus after Daniele Rugani.
Pogba, in a tweet on his official Instagram page on Wednesday,
said: “New training camp is called: ‘Quarantine PP Arena, open 24/7.
“Have fun working at home with my brother Victor Lindelof!
“Supporting our friends Blaise Matuidi, Albin Ekdal, and all athletes
and people around the world! Be strong, #StayAtHome and be safe.
“I know the cheeky ones will talk about the Juventus jersey.
“I’m just supporting my friends… that’s all, nothing more.”
Pogba, who turned 27 last Sunday, is currently recovering from knee surgery.
Rev Fr Ejike Mbaka, Adoration Minister, on Wednesday, declared that God has a cure for deadly Coronavirus.
Mbaka urged Nigerians not to be afraid or panic of the deadly Coronavirus because it would soon be a thing of the past.
He gave the charge during a praying at the Enugu Adoration ground during a special prayer for elimination of the disease.
Mbaka said: “To those who believe in God, all things are possible. No matter how it has defied people, it cannot defy God.
“Coronavirus, wherever you came from, be it any name you answer-
caterpillar virus, venza virus, corolla virus, I command you to be
ceased, in the Holy Ghost fire!
“Children of God, when you go home, circulate the message that a man
of God known as Fr. Ejike Mbaka told you to not be afraid of
coronavirus, be courageous it will soon be a thing of the pass.
“Fear is a dangerous omen, if you become perplexed; it shows
that you don’t believe so much on God’s power. Ebola came, it died off.
This one will also die off. It is like bird flu disease, it will come
and go. I know that the whole world is waiting to hear for the message
that will come out from this place, but the message I have is that the
disease will soon go.
“Under the priestly anointing, I release healing to the entire world
,particularly where the disease is ravaging so much, let there be
healing, let there be sunray always, which is one of the antidotes to
the disease. God release drug that will cure it in Jesus name.”
This is coming at a time when Federal Government placed a travel ban from some country.
The ban was aimed at curbing the spread of the disease in Nigeria.
Mixed reactions on
Wednesday trailed the reduction in the pump price of Premium Motor
Spirit from N145 to N125 per litre by the Federal Government.
While some Nigerians lauded the reduction, petroleum marketers,
however, faulted the government for not engaging stakeholders before
announcing the new price regime.
Newsmen report that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the reduction following the crash in the global crude oil prices.
Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, Executive Director, Socio-Economic Rights and
Accountability Project (SERAP), told newsmen that the reduction would
bring temporary relief to Nigerians who had been facing myriads of
economic challenges.
Mumuni said: “SERAP welcomes the reduction in the price of fuel but
we think more can still be done to lessen the pains of our people.
“We all know what Nigerians are facing today due to the harsh
situation of the country and we believe government needs to do more to
bring succour to the people.”
Wilson Opuwei, an oil and gas expert, said the government should be
commended for the reduction having successfully subsidised fuel when
prices were high at the international market.
Opuwei, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Dateline Energy
Services Limited, however, said that the government ought to have
carried the marketers along before arriving at the decision.
“This kind of reduction comes as a shock to marketers who have
already ordered for products but hopefully the government will pay the
differentials.
”Also, the marketers should adjust their prices because this is
a patriotic decision taken in the overall interest of Nigerians,” he
said.
However, a top marketer who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, said the government was not being fair to marketers.
“They have failed to pay marketers subsidy and then this unilateral reduction of price without consultation is not acceptable.
”What happens to all the stock that has been sold to marketers at a higher price? Will government pay the cash difference now?
“Government should be engaging marketers to plan for deregulation and not to set arbitrary prices,” he said.
Newsmen also reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
(NNPC)’s official twitter handle said that the new N125 per litre pump
price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol, will begin from March
19, 2020.
“In compliance with the directives of the Honourable Minister of
State for Petroleum Resources on PMS pricing, the Corporation has
reviewed its Ex-coastal, Ex-depot and NNPC Retail pump prices
accordingly.
“Effective March 19, 2020, NNPC Ex-Coastal price for PMS has been
reviewed downwards from N117.6/litre to N99.44/litre while Ex-Depot
price is reduced from N133.28/litre to N113.28/litre.
“These reductions will therefore translate to N125/litre retail pump price,” it said.

Elite football in England has been put on hold until April 4, with
several other leagues across Europe also being postponed due to the
coronavirus outbreak. The COVID-19 disease, which originally broke out
in China, has infected more than 167,000 people worldwide and caused
over 6,400 deaths.
Here, Express Sport has rounded all of the confirmed cases of the coronavirus in football.
SERIE A
So far, 10 players from Serie A have tested positive for COVID-19.
Italy’s top-flight is suspended until April 3, with the whole county in
lockdown following the outbreak.
Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani became the first player in the league to contract the virus.
Since then, players from Sampdoria and Fiorentina have also been infected.

the club have closed their training facilities while players and staff
who had close contact with Arteta self-isolate.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 23 suspected cases
of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been identified in Edo, Lagos, Ogun, FCT
and Kano states, out of which one was confirmed positive “index case”
with no death.
NCDC Director General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this while
speaking with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, adding
that as at March 7, there was no new confirmed case of COVID-19 in the
country.
NAN reports that this was the eighth national situation report,
following the confirmation of the first case of COVID-19 disease in the
country on Feb. 27, 2020.
Ihekweazu said that a total of 219 contacts were identified, including contacts from hotel, workplace and healthcare workers.
“No new contacts have been reported in Lagos and Ogun states,” he stressed.
He said the confirmed case was clinically stable at the designated
treatment facility for COVID-19 at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH)
Yaba, Lagos.
He reiterated that a multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations
Centre (EOC) activated at level three, had continued to coordinate the
national response activities, led by NCDC.
He noted that the field investigations were ongoing and all contacts were undergoing daily symptom monitoring.
According to him, Index patient is currently being managed at IDH,
Lagos, while passenger screening is ongoing at all international
airports.
He added that there was also centralised follow up of Persons of
Interests (POIs) initiated for persons outside Lagos and Ogun states.
“Testing of samples collected through the national influenza sentinel
surveillance system as part of enhanced surveillance is ongoing.
“A draft tool for tracking and monitoring HCW infection has been developed,” he said.
Ihekweazu said that resources on COVID-19 had been developed by NCDC,
for guidance of schools, Infection Prevention and Control
Recommendations for health workers. He said that Nigeria had published
the first African SARS-CoV-2 genome sequence, from the COVID-19 case.
This, he said was carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian
Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) African Centre of Excellence for
Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) and the Lagos University
Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
He added that the project was coordinated by the World Health Organisation(WHO) and NCDC.
NAN reports that the global situation, as at March, 6, 2020 was 98,192 confirmed cases which had been reported.
88.4 percent cases in China, 3,400 deaths.
The nine countries in Africa with reported cases are – Algeria,
Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon and
Togo. The WHO global risk assessment however, remained high.
Experts are worried that there could be more cases of COVID-19 in
Nigeria in the next two weeks, insisting that it is inevitable because
the country has been identified as one of the 13 countries in Africa at a
high risk of being overwhelmed by the virus due to weak health sector. Also, the index case of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in
Nigeria, a 44-year-old Italian, yesterday completed the 14-day isolation
recommended by the World Heath Organisation (WHO). Although the viral load of the 44-year-old Italian citizen is
reducing, he would not yet be discharged from the Infectious Disease
Hospital (IDH) Yaba, Lagos, as he was not yet totally free from the
virus.
The assertion was made by Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for
Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu; WHO Consultant on COVID-19
in Nigeria and Team Leader, Expanded Programme on Immunisation, Dr.
Fiona Braka and Director, Epidemiology, Biosecurity and Global Health
and Incident Manager COVID-19 Outbreak Lagos State Emergency Operations
Centre (EOC), Dr. Ismail Abdul-Salam, who spoke with journalists at a
roundtable in Lagos yesterday. They said contrary to some media reports, the Italian was visiting
Nigeria for the first time as a consultant to a company in Ogun State,
just as it was learnt that the Italian’s wife and brother have also
tested positive to the virus in Italy. “We are worried that we may have explosion of cases of coronavirus in
our country. This is why we are given special attention on passengers
coming from China, Italy, Iran, South Korea and Japan,” Ihekweazu said.
Braka said the WHO declaration that COVID-19 was now a pandemic meant
that all countries, especially those at high risk such as Nigeria
needed to redouble their efforts to prevent a situation where they would
be overwhelmed by the virus. Abdul-Salam pointed out that Lagos has prepared for the worst case
scenario in which many people may be infected with the virus, adding,
“At the beginning, even before the country confirmed the first case,
with the help of the WHO we have prepared for the worst case scenario.” Ihekweazu said as at March 11, 2020, there are two confirmed cases of
COVID-19 in Nigeria and apart from the index case, a total of 40 people
have been screened for COVID-19 (seven new) in five States (Edo, Lagos,
Ogun, Federal Capital Territory, FCT/Abuja and Kano) of which 39 tested
negative and have been ruled out, while one confirmed positive which is
a contact of index case with no death.
- Children, Africans may have special protection against COVID-19
Contrary to reports that a woman in Enugu who just returned from the
United States (U.S.) has tested positive to coronavirus, Minister of
Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire said, “The Enugu case is not confirmed but
still undergoing medical tests.”
However, the Enugu State Ministry of Health has quarantined a 70-year
old woman suspected to be infected with the coronavirus. She was said
to have travelled to the United Kingdom (UK) five months ago to see her
children.
She came into the country on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 with fever,
cough and mild respiratory distress and was flow from Lagos to Owerri
Airport in Imo State where she was moved to Enugu and isolated at the
Colliery Hospital, where doctors collected oropharyngeal and
nasopharyngeal swab and sputum samples.
Ehanire said there was no new confirmed case of COVID-19 in Nigeria as at Saturday, March 14, 2020.
“Cumulatively, Nigeria has recorded two confirmed cases of COVID-19
with no death and apart from the index case, 48 people including five
new suspected cases have been screened for COVID-19 in Edo, Enugu, Kano,
Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, and Yobe states and the Federal Capital Territory
(FCT) of which 46 tested negative and have been ruled out, while the
result is being awaited for one case,” he said
Meanwhile, there are indications that children and people from Africa
may have special protection against coronavirus. While a recent study
has backed up claims that the virus was less severe in children and less
likely to kill them compared to adults, there was yet any scientific
evidence supporting the latter notion.
The debate was fuelled by the fact that the first Nigerian patient
was cured of the virus in less than five days compared to the Italian
index case still battling with the disease 17 days after.
The Guardian recalled that the index case in Nigeria, a 44-year-old
Italian that tested positive to the virus on February 27, 2020, was yet
to be cured, while the second confirmed case, a 40-year-old Nigeria
tested positive on March 8, 2020, but was discharged on March 13.
Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),
Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, said, “The index case is clinically stable at the
designated treatment facility for COVID-19, the Infectious Disease
Hospital (IDH) Yaba, Lagos. An additional sample has been collected for
retesting.
“The second confirmed case, who was in contact with the index case,
has tested negative twice, has cleared the virus and was discharged on
March 13, 2020.
“All other contacts of the index case completed their follow up
period on Friday 13th of March 2020 and have been allowed to
re-integrate into the society and resume their normal lives.”
He, however, insisted that there is no scientific evidence that black
people have any advantage, adding, “For now we cannot explain what
happened. It does not mean that Africans or blacks have special
protection against the virus, because that can’t be determined with one
case.
“We need more cases and evidence to determine that, but what is
available shows that the virus has affected both whites and blacks
globally.”
Tonight is all about the stars who turned up at Eko Convention Centre
for the 7th edition of Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA),
As we applaud the celebrities who came to slay and win, we can’t help
but point out the few who obviously need to fire their stylists. Taking
a look at both male and female celebrities who walked on and posed on
tonight’s red carpet, we have compiled a list of some of the worst
dressed celebrities at the AMVCA’s.
Number 1 on the list is definitely BBNaija 2019 housemate, Omashola.
We all know coronavirus is ravaging the earth, but trying to use it as a
style inspiration was a total fail! Also, it appears Harry Songz didn’t
get the “You must bring your A-Game to any red carpet” memo.
On the other hand, a lot of the ladies either had a wardrobe malfunction
or just chose not to give a hoot about looking tacky. Because, what in
